What store sells coin collecting suppies?

Question by chispero19: What store sells coin collecting suppies?
Don't want to buy online. Does anybody know what retail store sells coin collecting supplies such as holders and albums?

Best answer:

Answer by Yahzmin: IGMA Artisan
Some craft stores do, but you would need to call and ask first to save a wasted trip.
Your best bet is to find a numismatist shop (coin dealer). These sometimes are joined with a collector's shop like baseball cards, for example. Just check online for your area to find one.

The Blue Book lists prices that you can expect a coin dealer to pay you for your coins

The Red Book lists prices that you can expect to pay if you were to buy them.

Question by Shawn O'neill: What does encapsulated and type set mean in coin collecting?

Best answer:

Answer by Mike1942f
You can double check these but encapsulated should mean contained in a sealed plastic case so the coin can be viewed but not touched or scratched - stiffer than a plastic bag.
Type set should mean all the coins of that design from the various mints - so might have coins from San Francisco, Denver, Pittsburgh depending on year.

Question by Jonny: I am new to coin collecting and I was wondering where (or how) to get silver coins at a cheap price?
By the way, I am Canadian so I collect Canadian coins.
What I mean by silver are coins that are usually minted before 1967 (not bullion coins)

Best answer:

Answer by Eugene
Unfortunately, silver coins are not easy to collect. Silver content is rather side effect for collector: the coin may be a garbage quality, but noone will sell it to you for less than silver value. The only silver coins that I got for less than silver value - are from the bank rolls. Rarely, you can find silver coin in a roll, esspecially old one. Also in US some people do not know that some silver coins were still minted after 1964. I am not sure how it was in Canada though. ANother thing, foreign silver coins - not many people will know the actual silver content. So you may get lucky and get the coin for less than silver spot price. Hope this helps.

What are some good coin collecting websites?

Question by Mr. X: What are some good coin collecting websites?
I need websites that sell old coins from ancient Rome and Greece. A website where the prices are reasonable and some other website besides eBay. Perhaps a website that you are familiar with and have bough coins in the past for your own collection. I am a beginner though. Thank you!

Answer by Alexander Kalian
I myself have ancient Greek coins because I'm half Greek. However, if you are in the UK you must be careful what you bring into here from other countries because any artifact of interest to the state can be repossessed at any time - meaning that lets say a British history museum need an ancient coin for an exhibit, the government can allow them to take one of your ancient coins and use it permanently for their exhibit. For this reason I keep all of my Ancient Greek coins in Greece. So be careful or you may just face a nasty surprise from the government.

Sorry i didn't answer your question, but I thought I should warn you.

Question by Jordan Ardakanian: does coin collecting help or hurt our economy?
economics project. also did the presidential coins and state quarters help or hurt the economy.

Best answer:

Answer by Eddie
well it would hurt the economy because money is essentially being taken out of circulation so that much less is being spent and passed around ect

im English so im not sure what state coins are but if they are like commemoration thing that are sold for more than what they are worth then they are helping the economy if they are brought by tourists ect because it is adding foreign earned money into your country

Question by *E*: i need help with coin collecting and values and such...?
Okay ythis is the deal i have a 1969 s- lincoln penny and i want to know how i can really tell if it's a double die obverse?
And second how do i go about putting it in an auction for coin collectors?
Would i need to pay someone to see if it's legit or not?

Best answer:

Answer by Aron R
One option might be to take a really close-up photo of the obverse, with the best quality macro mode that your digital camera can offer. Then review the photo, blown up large on your computer screen, to see if there is obvious evidence of a doubled-die. Another option is to use a high-powered magnifying glass in bright light.

If there is obvious evidence of doubling, you might consider putting the coin up for sale on eBay, with a modest initial price of just $ 0.01 or $ 0.99 or so, along with a reasonable shipping cost. That way, collectors can put their own value on the coin, bidding in a free and open marketplace. You can list any item there for just $ 0.15, so you won't lose much if the coin doesn't sell.

Before you list the coin, you might also wish to view the prices - and pictures - of completed listings for similar items. Here's how to search completed listings on eBay:

http://pages.ebay.com/completedlistings/

Here's a "canned" search you can try, to search for double-die pennies in completed auctions on eBay:

http://search-completed.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&dfsp=1&catref=C6&guest=1&saaff=afdefault&fcl=3&frpp=50&from=R6&saslop=1&saobfmts=exsif&fss=0&satitle=%28double%2Cdoubled%29+%28cent%2Cpenny%2Clincoln%29&sacat=11116%26catref%3DC6&sadis=200&fpos=94564&sabfmts=1&fis=2&sacqyop=ge&sacqy=&saprclo=&saprchi=&sass=&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D2&fgtp=

From a quick scan of the results of this search, double-die Lincoln cents dated 1968-S, 1969-S, and with similar dates and San Francisco ("S") mintmarks, were selling at prices ranging from around $ 0.99 to $ 15, prior to adding shipping costs. (Some sellers might also have gained additional profits by marking up shipping over their costs, although eBay discourages excessive shipping costs.) It should be noted that some auctions didn't attract any bids.

One other benefit of doing a 'completed items' search on eBay is that you can view photos of other pennies with doubled dies and compare them to your own, to see if yours might be similar.

Finally, you can also call local coin dealers to ask if they might wish to view the coin in person, and if so, on what terms and whether they might charge you for an assessment. Their responses will likely depend on whether they believe they might have buyers for these error coins and can make a decent profit on their resale.
