Agatha Asked:

I have some moderate to old US coins and was wanting to find some reputable coin collecting price guide sites. Any help is appreciated! Also, is there anywhere besides local coin shops to sell them?

Reply:

Here is one but you will need to adjust the coin collecting  price guide down by about 10 to 20%. They are a tad optomistic.

Ann Asked:

i have a question about coin collecting storage?

I'm three coins shy of completing my collection of silver eagle proofs. I am now storing them in a Dansco album complete with the "Archival Slipcase" will this discolor the coins over time? Most of my coins are slabbed and stored away but i really like the accessibility,in the end the preservation of the collection is most important. what have your experience been? please help!!!

I am not so sure that the Dansco albums themselves are archival. Also taking the coins out of the hard plastic holders means you had to handle them and I hope you used coin gloves. On modern proof items I have noticed they sell better with original boxes and capsules. To me it has always been the coin collecting storage not the holders that count but modern buyers are plaing a dangerious game for some holders are not that great and most come from by the mint. That is mint set and proof set holders. Myself I have some of the silver eagle proofs only because a good friend past on and I got his proof eagles. They are dated 1994-2000. A couple dates are on the scarce side. If I do keep them I will buy archival capsules for them, but not sure how I would display them. You are right the silver eagles in proof are really nice and they should be displayed but not so sure about an album. Maybe Eagle makes an album for them.  get an idea of what type of archival systems are available. Brookly has a lot of systems and the prices are good. Hope this helps.

Choosing a Rare Coin Dealer – a Few Tips

Although with the advent of the internet, finding a rare coin dealer has become easy, finding a credible and qualified one, is still a difficult task. It need not be so, if you were to take into consideration certain factors.

The first and foremost aspect that you need to look for in a coin dealer is experience. It is a fact that not everyone can become experienced overnight. Since you are in the market for buying rare coins, you should always try and look for a dealer who can give you accurate advice. Remember, rare coins do not come cheap it is no use going to a novice. Moreover, with so many counterfeit and fake coins going around the market, it is always preferable to seek the services of an experienced and credible rare coin dealer.

One good indicator of a dealer’s credentials would be the credential that they enjoy within the numismatic community. Another good indicator for a credible dealer would be a membership with a reputable organization such as the ‘Professional Numismatic Guild’ or PNG. Any member of the PNG is supposed to follow particular ethical standards and would therefore be a good choice.

Another important aspect that you need to look in a rare coin dealer is customer service. Does the dealer actually enjoy clarifying your doubts? It goes without saying that you need to avoid dealers who are pretty inaccessible or genuinely lack enthusiasm while dealing with collectors. You must also find out whether the dealer that you intend to choose regularly participates in auctions or not. Remember, those dealers who regularly participate in auctions are more aware of the current market conditions and therefore in a better position to guide you.
